Vmount 1.1 for VMware

Vmount is a free GUI wrapper for command line tool vmware-mount.exe The users manual for the vmware-mount describes the utility in the following way: "The VMware DiskMount Utility allows you to mount an unused virtual disk in a Windows host file system as a separate drive without needing to connect to the virtual disk from within a virtual machine. You can mount specific volumes of a virtual disk if the virtual disk is partitioned." Read more on www.vmware.com

New features in Vmount 1.1:

  • Recent Volumes – Up to 8 recently mapped volumes are available for quick mount from the context menu
  • Vmware-mount logging – View Log menu item has been added to help troubleshoot any problem related to the execution of native vmware-mount.exe
  • Auto-Config – The utility will try to automatically detect full path to the native vmware-mount.exe

Installation:
Download and run vmount1.1.exe

The setup will detect and, if required, automatically download and install Microsoft .Net 2.0 runtime. If you already have .Net 2.0 installed, please download and run the msi package - vmount1.1.msi The setup procedure is straightforward. The only configurable parameter during the install is the installation directory. The setup will put a shortcut to the utility on the desktop and will create file association for .vmdk files

Running the utility:
Double click the desktop shortcut to start the utility. Notification icon will appear in the tray. The utility will try to automatically detect the full path to vmware-mount.exe file. If the path to vmware-mount.exe is not configured correctly, vmount will display a warning. Clicking on the warning balloon allows to specify full path to the vmware-mount.exe. Native vmware disk mount utility is included with free vmware server or can be downloaded from www.vmware.com as a separate install.

Right clicking the notification icon will bring context menu. This menu can be used to mount or unmount Vmware disks.

It also allows to specify two configuration settings:

  • Full path to the vmware-mount.exe utility - this setting is self explaining
  • Mount virtual Vmware drives starting with - the utility will use free drive letters starting with the letter specified here. If the drive letter is not available, vmount will try the next one. If all the letters starting from the specified and up to 'Z' are already used, the mapping will fail without any error messages.

Another way to run the utility is double-clicking a vmdk file from Windows Explorer. In this case the utility will try to automatically map the file.

Limitations: There is not much error handling in this version. Click the View Log menu item to see what commands vmount executed and if there were any errors. If you think it’s important to better handle errors, support snapshots or have other suggestions for new functionality, please leave a comment in the blog.
